Could you tell me more about your experience on this subject? The buttons holding the chin strap on mine are plain black, maybe plastic covered with some kind of satiny fabric.

Only thing being I read somewhere that RAAF peak caps had bakelite buttons exclusively, which your posts (to my relief) seems to contradict.
